Veronique Hakim, MTA President visits Transit Tech High School

Veronique Hakim, the president of America's largest transit network, visited Transit Tech CTE High School on May 5. Ms. Hakim toured the campus, met and addressed multiple student gatherings. This visit reinforces MTA's long standing commitment and dedication to CTE. We are grateful to MTA leader Patrick Smith and all other partners from the Transit Authority for facilitating this high powered visit and for their continued dedication to CTE.

Division of School Facilities Intern Graduation 

On May 23, CTE partners and leaders from the Division of School Facilities came together to celebrate the successful completion of two cohorts of DSF interns. This year saw the scaling of the internship program by 50%. We are also proud to report that we increased recruitment of female interns into DSF trade areas by 25%. Our thank you to our partners at DSF and congratulations to our students.

Thomas A. Edison CTE HSNational Technical Honor Society 2016 Induction Ceremony

Thomas A. Edison High School, in Jamaica, NY,  recently held their National Technical Honor Society induction. Mr. Alexander Bell, the NTHS Advisor, and his administration have dedicated their tireless efforts to acknowledge their outstanding career and technology students.  Mr. Bell stated, “It was an evening of wonderful honors, speeches, and heartfelt celebrations.”  Two former NTHS members were present and spoke of what NTHS meant to them.  Mr. Bell explained, “…how their leadership roles prepared them for their current roles to become career and technical education teachers in the NYC public schools.”

Queens Students Get New Gear Thanks to $50,000 Grant

The Collision Repair Education Foundation and Thomas Edison Career and Technical High School in Jamaica, N.Y. held a ribbon cutting event Wednesday to celebrate the results of improvements to the school’s collision repair training program made possible by industry donations. The school was the recipient of the 2014 $50,000 Ultimate Collision Education Makeover school grant from the Education Foundation and has received support from local industry.

“This school gave me the tools and skills I need to be where I’m today,” said Moses Ojeda, principal of Thomas Edison Career and Technical High School, who graduated from the school himself in 1993. Ojeda returned to the school as a teacher and, after 10 years of teaching, was promoted to assistant principal. In 2012, he was
promoted to the top job as principal at the New York City school.

Long Island City Partnership hosts meet and greet with CTE

The NYC CTE team collaborated with the Long Island City Partnership for a meet and greet event with local businesses on May 23rd at Long Island City High School. The event will brought together a select group of businesses operating in LIC, CTE school leaders, and talented students from eight competitive schools in LIC. LIC is home to the following schools: Academy for Careers in Television & Film, Academy of Finance & Enterprise, Aviation High School, Energy Tech High School, Frank Sinatra High School, Information Technology High School, Long Island City High School, and Queens Vocational & Technical High School.  These high quality CTE schools train students for careers in engineering, plumbing, business, culinary, graphics, media, theater, hospitality and more. Each school had a display table and local businesses such as New York Water Taxi, Neumans Kitchen and Manducatis Rustica Restaurant attended. Attendees were treated to a breakfast catered by the staff and students of the Long Island High School culinary program.

Brooklyn South Borough Field Support Center­ STEAM Middle School College and Career Fair

On May 13, over 3000 middle school students attended the STEAM college and career fair at MCU Park. In collaboration with the CTE council’s Gender Equity Committee, the central CTE team hosted a table at this fair. Our table generated much interest amongst hundreds of female students. Also represented were several of our CTE schools including Transit Tech, Grady and the 9­14 PTech schools.

VE 2016 Youth Business Summit

From April 17-19, 2016, over 2,500 students from around the world gathered together in New York City for VE's 2016 Youth Business Summit (YBS), three days of competitive and collaborative business events bringing VE's "global business simulation" to life. This YBS commemorated VE's 20th anniversary as a program and 100,000 students served since 1996. Events included the prestigious National Business Plan Competition, the first-ever National Human Resources Competition, the unique Global Business Challenge, and the dynamic International Trade Show. Students demonstrated skills and knowledge in various business domains, connected with industry professionals, made lifelong friends, and shared an unforgettable experience to prepare themselves for a successful transition into college and career.
