#DDAwareness17 - Life Side by Side

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness month and this year's theme is Life Side by Side. HELP has joined forces with other provider agencies, county boards, and advocacy organizations across the country to promote Life Side by Side and awareness about people with disabilities living, working, and learning side by side with those who do not have a disability.

Community integration is a significant component of HELP's Adult Day Support programs in Euclid and Northfield. HELP staff are frequently taking consumers out into the community to explore local attractions, engage in new activities, and enjoy the sites throughout their cities. As Developmental Disabilities Awareness month comes to a close, we are proud to share these Side by Side outings with you to show you how much our consumers enjoy being able to live Life Side by Side.

Monday Night Raw

Monday night TV time at the Kohn Home is dedicated to Monday Night Raw. The residents here share a love of wresting and had the opportunity to see Raw live in Cleveland! HELP staff coordinated an outing to the Quicken Loans Arena so the residents could see their favorite WWE wrestlers in action.

Akron Art Museum

HELP's Day Program opened a second location in Summit County and these consumers have spent some time getting to know their new neighborhood. This group has tried new restaurants, frequented the bowling alley, and dedicated a day to exploring the Akron Art Museum and the many exhibits it has to offer.

Give Back to CLE

Consumers at the Euclid Adult Day Support Program gave back to their community by partnering with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. They collected donations for the food bank and volunteered their time to pack healthy lunches for CMSD students who do not have the resources to pack healthy lunches of their own.

2nd Annual Seniors Fashion Show

HELP's Senior Program was invited to participate in the Second Annual Developmental Disabilities Awareness Fashion Show at the Euclid Lakefront Senior Center. The fully integrated fashion show featured seniors from the Euclid Adult Activities Center, the Euclid Senior Center and HELP Foundation.

In Memoriam - Brian Kelly

With heavy hearts we share the news of the passing of Brian Kelly. Brian, who was only expected to live a year or two, was born in 1964 with Down's Syndrome and other physical and metal challenges. He defied the odds and lived a meaningful life until he passed away at age 53 on March 23rd. Brian was a catalyst for the creation of HELP Foundation and played a role in legislation that now protects the rights of individuals with disabilities. Our deepest sympathies to the Kelly family and all of those who Brian inspired.

HELP U Shred - A Day With David

What's Happening in our HELP Homes

Consumers who live in HELP's group homes enjoy a family-like setting where their medical, physical, emotional, social, and developmental needs can be met. Our group homes have scheduled programming to keep consumers engaged and entertained while they are at home. These programs include Art Therapy, Music Therapy, and even adaptive yoga. The residents at these homes enjoy exploring new activities, learning new skills, and developing their hobbies with their housemates.

Art Therapy

Each week, the men of Nottingham spend time doing Art Therapy. These men very talented and their works of art from their time in therapy can be found all around the house! Art Therapy is a great outlet for these gentlemen and something they have enjoyed doing together for quite some time.

Music Therapy

Beyond Words sends wonderful staff members to our Kohn home to work with the residents through Music Therapy every other week. Music Therapy is an entertaining hour for the residents while re-enforcing skills like attention, safe expression, verbal skills, and auditory processing.
