York Centre for Asian Research: "Decolonial Anti-fascism Symposium: Lessons from Māori and Asian Organizing in Aotearoa New Zealand"

When: Tuesday, Nov 14,  9:30 to 17:00 EST
Where: Keele Campus, York University and Virtually via Zoom

The growth of fascism in Aotearoa is linked to a transnational context that has shapeshifted during the pandemic, instigating a revival of more overt forms of anti-Māori and anti-Asian racism. In recent years, Canadian and UK white supremacist and transphobic figures have visited to spread fascist ideologies, only to be de-platformed by Indigenous and POC coalitional organizing. At the same time, much like in other settler colonial contexts, there has been an absence of political discourse that has been able to name and make sense of fascist and white supremacist violence.

Counterpunch: "We Need to Disarm the Discourse on China"

Published: Oct 20, 2023
Written by: Cale Holmes & Lawson Adams

From racist tweets to rising hate crimes, the media‘s anti-China propaganda has created a climate of aggression. Two weeks ago, a man drove a car into the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, yelling “Where‘s the CCP?” Arab Americans have been targeted during the Persian Gulf War, the War on Terror, and U.S.-backed atrocities in Palestine. It‘s no surprise that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are in the crosshairs of white supremacy as the U.S. targets China.

China Daily: "National security weaponized by Ottawa in app ban: China Daily editorial"

Published: Nov 1, 2023

By banning TikTok in February and WeChat and Kaspersky now, Canada has made its definition of "security risk" clear: anything produced by China or a country Canada doesn't have friendly relations with poses a security risk. That neither WeChat nor TikTok nor Kaspersky has been found guilty of snooping or "stealing" personal information or intruding on the privacy of users, which apps made by Western companies are often found doing, is of least concern to Canada.
