1. Upcoming CTLT Indigenous Initiatives Events:

a. Building TA Training Programs through Indigenous Engagement and Equity and Inclusion Frames -- June 7 9:00-10:30am

Join facilitators from the CTLT Indigenous Initiatives team and the UBC Equity and Inclusion Office to learn more about the opportunities available to support Teaching Assistants at UBC to work in closer alignment with university priorities relating to Indigenous engagement and inclusive excellence.C. The audience for this session is TA Training Coordinators, Faculty, Instructors, and experienced TAs.

b. Reconciliation through Reciprocity: Implementing the Indigenous Finance Guidelines in Teaching & Research -- June 9 9:00-10:30am

This workshop will introduce the Indigenous Finance Guidelines (IFG) from the Indigenous Research Support Initiative (IRSI), highlighting the ways that this resource can support Indigenous engagement within teaching and learning as well as more broadly. Facilitators will be introducing protocols around topics such as reciprocal gifting, acknowledgement practices, and the impact on research outcomes. This event will include a discussion about applying the IFG as a resource when planning and other considerations for creating a generative and reciprocal learning experience when engaging with Indigenous Elders, speakers, researchers and community members in courses.

c. Walking the Talk: Sharing Our Practices Engaging with Indigenous Initiatives -- June 10 9:00-10:30am

Educators have continued through a demanding year of learning and adjustment to dig into critical classroom issues that centre Indigenous voices, experiences and initiatives, even in the online space. Come listen to this panel session with members of the Indigenous Initiatives Learning Community who will be sharing their own stories of how they managed to keep their passion for this work moving throughout these times of pedagogical shifts and important changes, how they engage in this work within their own departments and faculties, and share examples of pedagogical innovations they have been working on during the past year and beyond.

d. Anti-Racist Teaching Series: Exploring Complex Classroom Dynamics Using Case-Studies -- June 21 1:00-3:00pm

This workshop will explore complex classroom dynamics, like microaggressions and tensions between students. Using Open Case Studies at UBC that highlight Indigenous students‘ experiences, participants will explore and examine the stories while looking at how it changes the classroom climate and context. Concepts and topics include:tokenism, conflicting worldviews, burden of representation, course topics that impact students personally, and self-determination.

2. CTLT Indigenous Initiatives Virtual Coffee Drop-ins

Do you have questions about how to thoughtfully integrate Indigenous content and representation into your course work? Curious about how to offer meaningful land acknowledgements in online meetings or events at UBC? Indigenous Initiatives‘ Virtual Coffee Drop-ins are a great place to explore these topics, connect with others on the same learning path, or just get to know our team.

3. Doing this Work With Care: What I Learned in Class Today Renewed Project Panel Discussion

In March, the WILICT project team welcomed a Faculty Perspectives film screening and panel discussion to dialogue about deepening the University’s commitment to Indigenous wellbeing within and beyond the classroom. Though this session was not recorded, this article highlights the panelists’ insights and the central theme from the session of doing this work with care.

4. Indigenous Foundations Article: The Residential School System 

The Indigenous Foundations website recently published an *updated* article on The Residential School System by Erin Hanson (2009), with revisions by Daniel P. Gamez & Alexa Manuel (September 2020). The newest edition includes new information and resources on how survivors have continued to demand justice from the decades of wrongdoing and discusses the ongoing impacts of residential schools. 

5. ***Call Out: Looking For Participants Who Have Engaged with Indigenous Initiatives Resources***

The Indigenous Initiatives team is creating a series to highlight our resources and the ways in which they are used in teaching and learning environments with care. We are searching for approaches that faculty, students, and staff have used our supported resources in coursework and curriculum design. 6. Across Our Desks: News and Articles Related to Indigenous Engagement in Teaching and Learning

a. Celebrate Learning Week -- May 17-23

CTLT is hosting the twelfth annual Celebrate Learning Week! This year’s theme is Shaping Our Future. Each day has different events including workshops, poster sessions, and special guest speakers. View the whole event schedule on their website, including the TLEF and ALT-2040 virtual showcase on May 17, where the in/relation project supported by the Indigenous Initiatives team will be one of the presenters.

b. BCcampus Indigenization Guides: An Untapped Gem

Have you explored the BCcampus Indigenization Guides? These were created with the help of Indigenous education leaders from throughout BC. This article explores why they are considered underused resources and how some universities across BC are utilizing the Indigenization guides.

c. Centering Indigenous Engagement In The Work of Wellbeing and Health Promotion

The Canadian Health Promoting Campuses Network is hosting an online event about centring Indigenous engagement in health promotion and wellbeing. Join this online discussion to learn about how institutions can approach the work of the Okanagan Charter through the lens of Indigenous engagement by learning from the strengths, knowledge, and practices of Indigenous Peoples', rooted in their diverse worldviews and ways of being in our understanding of wellbeing and health promotion within the higher education model.

d. Job Opportunity: Project Manager, Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) Indigenous Transformation Project

The UBC Sauder School of Business is seeking applicants for a Project Manager position to manage the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) Indigenous Transformation Project. The position is responsible for managing the delivery of the TLEF Transformation Project “Enhancing Business Education with Indigenous Knowledge” which focuses on integrating Indigenous knowledge, values and competencies into the pedagogy of UBC Sauder School of Business in an effort to address gaps and insufficiencies in knowledge around Indigenous topics. The application deadline is May 23rd at 11:59pm.
