Advice from Staff

"If you could give one piece of advice to recruits what would it be?"

yd2

From Tori:

"Behave as you would if you are already in. That way, if you're rocking it, we know you'll rock it in the future. So maybe who you are in recruitment is who we need to see if you're accepted to UB. Don't wow us now and then underperform later."

From Eva Silvia:

"Make sure you participate and stay off your phones during class."
yd2

From Martika:

"If you know you do not have a strong application (maybe you are just not good at essays or your grades haven't been the best) utilize the in-person sessions as a way to be unforgettable. Be sure at least one staff person really knows you because that can help make up for the application."

Interview Tips

1. Be sure you pay attention to each member's name and use that information throughout the interview.
2. Don't give short, two-word responses. Always try to expand on your answers.
3. Ask at least one question at the end of the interview (this shows interest).
4. You're amazing so be sure to make sure they know that. Don't downplay your accomplishments and wins!
5. Be honest.
6. At the end of the interview thank them for their time.
7. Understand your abilities and why you want to be a part of the program.

Bring a Friend

If you have a friend that is interested in the program but did not attend the informational presentation at your high school, bring them! Students do not have to attend the presentation to come to the Saturday meetings. Saturday Meetings are open to any and every student that is interested in TRIO Upward Bound.
