Welcome to the 4th issue of Growing More in Morton, a quarterly online newsletter published by Morton County Extension. The goal of this newsletter is to be an educational resource and highlight North Dakota agriculture and natural resource issues in our area.

Farm Bill Workshop

Have you made your farm bill selections for 2021? 
Are you unsure if you should pick ARC or PLC?

Attend an upcoming farm bill workshop to learn more about the programs and how to use the NDSU Farm Bill Calculator. Workshops will be held February 22 & March 3. Pre-registration is required and you are encouraged to bring your FSA 156EZ form and a device with Excel capabilities. 

Pesticide Trainings

Trainings are almost full! Be sure to get signed up as soon as possible if your certification is expiring in 2021. Cost is $30 and pre-registration is required.

Morton County Agricultural Improvement Association

The Morton County Agricultural Improvement Association will hold its annual meeting on February 27, 2021 at 6:30pm in Mandan. This group helps to promote the interest of livestock and seed growers in Morton County. Activities include hosting a plot tour, selecting a harvest bowl nominee and participating in the seed increase program. 

Drought Webinars

About 85% of North Dakota is experiencing some level of drought and many ranchers are concerned the drought will extend into the 2021 grazing season.

North Dakota State University Extension specialists will host a live webinar series to assist ranchers as they prepare for a drought. 
All webinars will begin at 1 p.m. CST and last two hours.

Design Your Succession Plan

Design Your Succession Plan Workshops are being held virtually this year! This program allows you to explore the four components of succession planning which include planning for your business, retirement, transition and estate. Each week, participants will receive videos and activities to complete prior to the online discussion workshops. 

Registration deadline is February 25 and the cost is $80. 

Soil Acidity Project

Do you have acidic fields?
Are you interested in seeing the affects of surface applied beet lime?

The Dickinson Area Research Extension Center is working on a project to evaluate the impact of lime rate on North Dakota soils. Researchers are currently looking for collaborating growers with no-till acidic fields.

Annie's Project

Are you a women involved in the management and decision making on your farm?
Do you want to learn more about financial statements, USDA programs, estate planning, farmland leasing and more?

Consider participating in Annie's Project! This program has 6 educational sessions that focus on the five areas of risk management. 

Crop Compare Program

Are you still undecided on what to plan next year?

Consider using the NDSU Crop Compare Tool to help compare cropping alternatives. The program uses direct costs and yields from the 2021 projected crop budgets and the user can choose a reference crop and enter its expected market price. The program then compares 9-18 different crops and provides the prices that would be necessary to get the same return over variable costs.

Soil Talk Tuesdays

Join Dr. Abbey Wick and guest speakers during Soil Talk Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30pm. Each week different soil health practices are discussed by a live-hosted panel that answer your questions. 

Communication Workshops

These workshops are created to help you engage in better information exchange. They are live-hosted on Tuesdays form 9:30-10:30am and feature various communication experts. 

Sunday Spotlight

Don't forget to tune into my Sunday Spotlights that are posted the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. These are short education videos that are intended to keep you up to date on programs and informed about issues occurring in the county. 

Farm Safety Webinars

The goal of the Farm Safety Webinar Series is to start the conversation of safety as a priority at the farm/ranch level. Alongside with Extension educators and agriculturists, participants develop an awareness and embrace a behavior change to keep safety and health as the number one priority on the farm/ranch.

Webinar topics include grain bin safety, tractor & equipment safety, youth farm safety, livestock safety and QPR training.
