Brisbane (Meeanjin / Magandjin) IAPA members were stoked to welcome IAPA Founder, Convenor and Lead NSW Senate candidate, Uncle Owen Whyman, up from Wilcannia for a few days around the 26th of January. Accompanying him were his son, Rally, and his daughter, Amelia, who designed the Party logo.

"So how's that Indigenous Party going"

That's a question we get a lot and the honest answer is "Pretty good". It's a sad fact that most Indigenous parties in Australia haven't lasted longer than two elections. We're determined to be different. As Uncle Owen Whyman, founder and Convenor of the IAPA, says, "We're here to stay; we're not going anywhere." So there may be times when volunteer labour and money is in short supply and we have to contract a little to survive, but survive, then flourish, we will.
Scroll to the very end for 'From deserts  Prophets Come', covering the early history of the IAPA.

Over 3200 Members and still growing steadily

What has usually killed Australian Indigenous parties in the past has been the inability to prove a membership of over 500 on an ongoing basis. As you know the major parties conspired to increase that requirement to 1500 at the federal level in the...

Passed AEC membership testing again in Oct 2023

In October last year, as required by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) to continue our federal registration, we again proved to their satisfaction that we have at least 1500 members. This process is required once between each election for 'Non - Parliamentary parties'; that is, parties who have not had a member elected yet or been formed around an existing member or had an elected member defect to them. Unfortunately until the IAPA becomes a 'Parliamentary party' we will have to impose on our patient loyal members to have a selection of them submitted for AEC 'membership testing'. The AEC uses a randomised statistical procedure so only a sample of the members we submit are contacted by the AEC. Thank you so much for all the members who were willing to be contacted and especially those who replied positively. An extra thanks to those who kept us in the loop by CCing us in on your reply.

IAPA members back Traditional Custodians to protect Kariong Sacred Lands as re-zoning looms

In the heart of the NSW Central Coast, just an hour‘s drive north of Sydney, an area known as Kariong Sacred Lands is of profound cultural and environmental value for Traditional Custodians. At present, Kariong Sacred Lands have the highest protection status for private land, zoned as C2 for Environmental Conservation. However, a proposed re-zoning threatens to compromise this protection...

Marnie Laree Davis, IAPA candidate in Fadden, talks about Family Violence

Marnie Davis has a long history working in Aboriginal Family Wellbeing & Domestic Violence Prevention. The events of recent weeks have moved her to write:

"It‘s alarming to hear that 28 women have died due to domestic violence already this year and three of those were in Ballarat. Currently one woman is killed due to domestic violence every nine days in Australia. This is a national crisis. As concerning are all the other serious incidents which do not make it through the systemic barriers to reporting.

26th of January, after the march in Musgrave Park

Uncle Owen Whyman, Tarelle 'Rally' Jones, Amelia Whyman, Marnie Davis, Angelina Davis (all pictured) and  Lionel Henaway & his wife and IAPA member Diana gathered after the march at Musgrave Park to set up a stall promoting the Party and to sell a little merch. Musgrave Park is the spiritually, culturally and politically powerful home of the Yuggera people, a traditional meeting place for tens of thousands of years, and since colonisation, a meeting place and focus of resistance for the 'Brisbane Blaks', originating mainly from all over Qld and Northern NSW but finding their home in Brisbane and united in solidarity and survival, struggle and resistance against colonial oppression. Could you chip in a little for the Barkindji bus?

Click or touch the button below to take you to the Chuffed fundraiser 'Bus for the Barkindji Baaka Dance Group' This fundraiser is completely separate to the fundraising for the IAPA political party. No money collected for the bus will be used for political purposes and no IAPA political funds will be used to help buy the bus. The bus will be used to get the dance group to festivals and corroborees and occasionally for other community groups, such as the Wilcannia Boomerangs Rugby League team, to participate outside their area.

Donating to the IAPA - it's tax deductible

The IAPA will survive without donations because we can run on the smell of an oily rag but we will be able to expand a lot quicker with some money and it will take a lot of pressure off the candidates and volunteers. We don't get big donations from businesses, wealthy philanthropists or unions which means we are completely independent and uncompromised. We were so grateful for the hundreds of small donations we received to fund our last general federal election campaign in May 2022. It means a lot because we imagine most of our donors are not particularly wealthy people.

Lionel Henaway, lead Qld Senate Candidate, with his wife, Diana and James 'Jimmy the Jet' Roberts at the Murri V Koori Interstate Challenge in February

Like the NSW Koori Knockout and the Qld Murri Carnival, the Murri V Koori Interstate Challenge is a great place to spread the word about the IAPA with players and supporters coming from all over Qld and NSW. This is especially useful for Senate candidates who have to cover the whole state.

Lionel and Di love their rugby League and especially the Indigenous players so they don't mind mixing 'business' with pleasure. Lionel is also related to Gordon Tallis and some other Broncos so he likes to keep up with what they are up to.

The IAPA Bendigo Group

We're not sure that a modern political party has to consist of formal branches with Presidents, Secretaries, minutes etc. but we love it, and are very grateful, when members get together and see what they can do to progress the IAPA.

Thanks to Virginia Lovig, that's what happened in Bendigo and surrounds when she agreed to be a local contact person. If you would like to do a similar thing in your area please contact the Party on indigenouspartyofaustralia@gmail.com and we can start the process with you.

'From Deserts, Prophets Come' - The History of the Indigenous - Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA) up to Election 2022

The IAPA comes from a long history of Aboriginal resistance and activism in remote Western NSW, growing out of a spiritual, emotional, social and sustaining bond to the Baaka (Darling River).

Barkindji means ‘people of the river’. Uncle Owen Whyman says, “The Baaka is our mother” and means it...
