Volunteer Opportunities

As UBjectives deadline approaches for everyone we have had students ask the staff about volunteering. For TRIO UB, we do not have any more volunteer opportunities for this semester. However, there are plenty of options all around town! The City of Denton's website has a whole webpage of organizations that have volunteer opportunities. There is even a section where you can fill out a form to be a volunteer for the city. From my knowledge, they will email you volunteer opportunities as they come up. You may also check out the local libraries. They will typically have some options. All you need to do is call them or message them on social media and they will provide you with all the information you need.

Zombie Apocalypse Scholarship

Did binge-re-watching "The Walking Dead" get you thinking about what you‘d do if the streets were filled with flesh-eating zombies? Maybe you've envisioned your own post-apocalyptic world overrun with the living dead, forcing you to come up with a zombie survival plan — and quick!

Hone your survival tactics and imagine what your school or college campus might be like in a zombie apocalypse. Our Zombie Apocalypse Scholarship committee wants to know your plan to avoid the zombies, where you‘d hide, and the top-five things you‘d bring to stay alive.

We're giving one successful survivor $2,000 towards his or her college education. Do you think you have what it takes to make the cut?

Applicants must:

 - This award is for U.S. students.
 - Must be a legal U.S. resident.
  - Must be a resident of one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.
- Must be 14 years of age or older at time of application.

"Imagine that your high school or college has been overrun with zombies. Your math professor, the cafeteria ladies, and even your best friend have all joined the walking dead. Flesh out a plan to avoid the zombies, including where you‘d hide and the top-five things you‘d bring to stay alive." (250 words or less)

The Zombie Apocalypse Scholarship winner will be notified by email or phone on or around.

Riddle Me This...

With pointed fangs I sit and wait; with piercing force I crunch out fate; grabbing victims, proclaiming might; physically joining with a single bite. What am I?

Psychologists in private practice often set their own hours, and many work part time as independent consultants. They may work evenings or weekends to accommodate clients. Those employed in hospitals or other healthcare facilities may also have evening or weekend shifts. Most psychologists in clinics, government, industry, or schools work full-time schedules during regular business hours.

Meningitis Shot

The meningitis vaccine protects against meningococcal disease, which is a serious bacterial illness. Many colleges and boarding schools require it to protect students living in dorms. As an UB student, you are required to show Eva Silvia proof that you have received this shot.

If you have insurance it is highly recommended that you go to your doctor to get the shot. This would be the cheapest way for you.

If you do not have insurance you have options. You can go to the Denton County Public Health Department, CVS, or Walgreens to get the meningitis shot. However, CVS and Walgreens is pretty expensive - $75 - $150, so we recommend the Public Health Department. It will be a little wait but extremely worth it.

If you have already gotten your shot all you will need to do is bring a copy of your shot record to UB. Eva Silvia will look over and make sure everything is okay. This document will then be sent to the colleges you applied for.

You need to start looking at getting your TSI scores! If you took the TSI for a dual credit class then you will need to ask your counselors for your scores. If you are exempt from the TSI you will need your ACT/SAT score instead.

The Texas Succes Initiative law requires every college entering student to demonstrate readiness in reading, writing, and math by earning an acceptable score in each area on the TSI Assessment unless you prove an exemption. The following list shows different ways students may qualify as being exempt from the TSI. Please review the exemption options below to see if you qualify.

Depending on what college-level course(s) you have already successfully completed, you may be exempt from taking the TSI Assessment in one or more areas. A TSI Coordinator will evaluate your COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY transcript(s) to determine if the courses you have successfully completed will qualify.
