Installation of Fruiting Bodies Sculpture #2

Where

Renfrew Community Park, East 22nd Avenue, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Description

Still Moon Arts Society has been working hard since January to weave sculptures from invasive species in Renfrew Ravine into figurative sculptures. On March 23rd we installed the first figure, a human; come drop by and help us on April 19th (Good Friday), to install the second figure, a salmon. These woven sculptures are stuffed with a mixture of mushroom spawn, hay, and chipped alder: food for local mushrooms which will eventually sprout and cycle nutrients in the ecosystem. Find us at Renfrew Park beside the stream, halfway between the dog park and Renfrew Park Community Centre.

Mycelial Connections Celebration

Where

Vancouver Public Library, Renfrew Branch, East 22nd Avenue, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Description

Join us for an Eco-Art walk in Renfrew Park followed by mushroom soup, as we celebrate the successful installation of our Mycelial Connections and Fruiting Bodies sculptures! These are living sculptures about the cycles of life, death, and regeneration that make a healthy world. They are made with Oyster Mushroom mycelium that is binding and eating sawdust, natural textiles dyed with plants and mushrooms, and plant materials from Renfrew Ravine including woven English Ivy, Alder, Maple, and Hazel. They are sealed with beeswax. Over time the mycelium will produce mushrooms, decay the wood, build soil, and cycle nutrients in the ecosystem. Walk and talk led by lead artists Willoughby Arevalo and Carmen Rosen, with the support of Bea Miller, Rebecca Graham, and Still Moon Arts Society. Special thanks to the many contributing community members (human and non-human). Made possible with funding from Vancouver Community Public Art, Vancouver Parks Board Neighbourhood Matching Fund, and the BC Arts Council.
