Community Garden Vacancies

Cottonwood Community Garden

The garden runs along the south perimeter of Strathcona Park on Malkin Ave, between Chess & Raymur Avenues. There are 145 plots and the fee for gardening is $15 per year plus a $5 membership fee.

Eastside Ecostewards

Where

New Brighton Park, New Brighton Road, Vancouver, BC, Canada


Description

Eastside Ecostewards brings together members of Vancouver's community to care for our parks and wild spaces in a sustainable, community-oriented way. This event will involve removing invasive blackberry plants from either New Brighton Park or Empire Field in northeast Vancouver. Our invasive species removal events are restricted to youth 14-18yrs and adults.

EcoStewards

Description

Natural habitats in Stanley Park are being impacted by invasive species. Join us in the Park this week to enhance Vancouver‘s largest urban forest by removing invasive species such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and yellow flag iris! By participating in this program, you will learn firsthand about the threat invasive species pose to our native ecosystems, make an important contribution to conservation and restoration in Stanley Park, and work with a great group of like minded volunteers in a beautiful outdoor setting.

A reminder email with detailed information about the day‘s activity will be sent to registered volunteers a few days before the event. Volunteers should arrive dressed for the weather with sturdy shoes, and be prepared to work on uneven terrain.

Everett Crowley Park Stewardship

Get dirty, have fun and help the environment!

Join us for monthly stewardship events to help remove invasive plants, plant tree/shrubs and learn more about the unique history and ecology of Everett Crowley Park. Gloves, tools and light refreshments are provided.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy, close-toed shoes. Weather permitting.

Traditional Medicine-Making: Tinctures

Description

Craft your own cures with Senaqwila Wyss, an ethnobotanist with the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). Learn about the medicinal qualities and traditional uses of native plants in Spapeyeq (Stanley Park).

What are we making?

Who is the workshop leader?
Senaqwila Wyss is Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), Tsimshian, Sto:lo, Hawaiian and Swiss. She will be graduating from SFU in the fall with her B.A. in the faculty of Communications, Arts and Technology, minor in First Nations Studies. She just completed the SFU F.N. Languages Proficiency Certificate in the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Sníchim. She is raising her 3-year-old daughter to be a First Language speaker, which has not been done in her family in four generations. She practices ethnobotany with traditionally trained mom Cease Wyss with Indigenous plant medicines. She was raised learning these ancestral teachings and uses plants as teas, medicines, tinctures and ceremony.
