Toll-free Racist Incident Helpline

"People in B.C. who witness or experience a racist incident can now call a new helpline to receive trauma-informed, culturally appropriate support in more than 240 languages.

The Racist Incident Helpline is a toll-free, accessible service established in partnership with United Way BC 211. The helpline was created for people who have been subjected to discrimination based on the colour of their skin, culture, ethnicity or place of origin.

Callers will receive support and guidance, which could include referrals to local community support services, such as counselling or help with reporting to law enforcement."

☎️The Racist Incident Helpline is available by dialing (toll-free) 1 833 457-5463 (1 833 HLP-LINE).

This helpline is operational on weekdays from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and outside of these hours, callers can leave a voicemail with contact information for a call back. The helpline is not intended to replace emergency services. People in need of immediate assistance should call 911.

Summer Concert Series –Sebastian Gaskin

Join Coquitlam’s Summer Concert Series, which showcases a different genre of music each night. Kick-back and relax while enjoying live local talent playing a mix of original songs and well-known favorites. On August 16, do not miss Sebastian Gaskin, whose music lends itself to a bold intuition and gut instinct. At once, it conjures the timeless spirit of Bill Withers and the musical virtuosity of John Mayer, with the mischievous wordplay of Post Malone and Pro Era. 

The concert is free to attend and offer food trucks on-site to grab a bite to eat while enjoying the show.

International Overdose Awareness Day

Sat, August 31| 11:00am - 3:00pm| Blue Mountain Park, 975 King Albert Ave, Coquitlam BC V3J 7A3

Join Tri-Cities Community Action Team for the "International Overdose Awareness Day: Creative Expression of Social Justice." 

The event focus will be arts of all sorts, a creative expression of social justice. There will be artists showcasing their artwork in many different mediums. The themes of the art will be around mental health, stigma, and substance use or misuse. There will be live artists as well, and a community engagement project. Along with the artists, service providers will be coming out to hand out resources, offer onsite naloxone training, open up discussions and educate those around harm reduction, and break down stigmas surrounding.

This event is free, and no registration is required. 

Tri-Cities Community Action Team is also looking for artists and service providers to sign up and participate in this event. If you are a service provider whose services focus on mental health/substance use and/or you are a local artist who has been impacted by this crisis in some way, consider signing up for this event by

Nominations are Now Open for the 2024 Port Moody Civic Awards

The Civic Awards are presented bi-annually to deserving people, organizations, and businesses that have made significant contributions to the community in six categories: accessibility, arts, climate action, environment, heritage, and sport. Port Moody Committees accept and review nominations and make award recommendations to Council. Nominations will be accepted until Friday, September 20, 2024.

Nominations can be submitted by anyone, and they should be made without the nominee(s) being informed of the nomination, and the confidentiality of the nominations should always be maintained. Nominations can be made for any of the following awards: Peter Hulbert Accessibility Award, Arts Award, Climate Action Award, Environmental Award, Heritage Award, Sports Award (Adults).

Front Desk Assistant

The Immigrant Settlement & Integration Program (ISIP) at S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is currently looking for a Front Desk Assistant to perform the following responsibilities:

  • Front Desk support.
  • Greeting walk-in clients and visitors.
  • Answering phone, directing calls.
  • Helping clients register for workshops, classes or events.
  • Promoting programs and services.
  • Assisting Program Assistants with administrative tasks when needed.
  • If you speak Farsi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Arabic, or Ukrainian, consider applying for this volunteer position.

Sandwich Outreach Volunteer

The Sandwich Outreach Volunteer with Low Entropy is an opportunity to extend a helping hand and an empathetic ear to the homeless community, fostering relationships built on trust and understanding. As part of a dedicated team of compassionate volunteers, engage directly with homeless individuals, establishing genuine connections. The primary objective is to build a foundation of trust, paving the way for open dialogues and a better understanding of the unique challenges faced by the homeless community. Responsibilities for this volunteer position include:

  • Distributing food and water/drinks.
  • Handing out other essential items such as blankets/rain gear.
  • Providing information and guidance on local housing resources and services.

SAF-HAVN Program

The BC Services and Assistance for Humanitarian and Vulnerable Newcomers he CONNECT program provides case management and support services to refugee claimants, asylum seekers, and others who arrive in BC through specific humanitarian streams. Eligible clients receive assistance with immigration and settlement, labor market services, formal and informal language learning, access to emergency housing and counselling. Service areas include Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Maple Ridge, and Pitt Meadows. This program offers services in different languages: Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Hindi, Kirundi, Pashto, Spanish, Swahili, Ukrainian, and Urdu.

Who is it for?
  1. Refugee Claimants for most services.
  2. Asylum Seekers for some services.
  3. Other Humanitarian Pathways including individuals in Canada:
  • Palestinian nationals affected by the crisis in Gaza;
  • Foreign nationals affected by the conflict in Sudan;
  • Colombian, Haitian and Venezuelan nationals with family.

Service Areas:
  1. Settlement and Immigration - Claims submission, Healthcare, Childcare. 
  2. Labour Market Services - Job Search, Employment Counselling, Resume Writing, Short-term certificate training.
  3. Language Support - Assessment, Workplace and English Training.
  4. Housing Search Assistance.
  5. Clinical Counselling.

Frequently asked questions:
  • How much does it cost? Or is it free? It is free, and clients can join at no cost.
  • Where will the activities/ employment training/ English classes take place? Hybrid mode. In-person for some community events, workshops and short-term certifications and over Zoom for some online classes.

Civic Opportunities for Newcomers: Networking and Engaging Communities Together (CONNECT)

The CONNECT program at MOSAIC is an opportunity for racialized immigrants and newcomers to participate in social and civic engagement activities, such as community engagement sessions and regional collaboration groups. This program aims to enhance interaction and dialogue among diverse community groups, increasing knowledge and practical skills of immigrants related to active social and community involvement. It also supports communities in confronting racism and discrimination, promoting intercultural and interfaith understanding, and fostering equitable opportunities to participate fully in the Canadian society.

Young BC Newcomers to Lead Nature Walks For Their Communities 

Young newcomers in British Columbia, supported by the BC Parks Foundation's Spark Fund, have been leading nature walks in their communities this summer. These initiatives, organized by groups like MOSAIC, aim to connect refugees and immigrants with nature, enhancing well-being and fostering community bonds. Participants will receive training as Green Ambassadors, allowing them to lead activities and educate others on outdoor safety and park etiquette in multiple languages. This program highlights the resilience and adaptability of newcomers, providing them with opportunities to engage and thrive in their new environment.

Anti-Racism Awareness Course

The Anti-Racism Awareness course, offered by the Faculty of Education's Professional Development & Community Engagement department at the University of British Columbia, is a free program that systematically explores implicit and explicit forms of historic, systemic, and institutional racism, as well as their colonial and intersectional impacts on marginalized communities, both historically and in contemporary times.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of how racism is entrenched in everyday interactions and relationships across all areas of society and its institutions. Learners from various disciplines, professions, organizations, and communities will be encouraged to critically examine racism and transition from denial to awareness, action, and the dismantling of institutional and systemic racism to effect lasting change.
