1. Message from us at CTLT Indigenous Initiatives

Hello everyone!

We hope you and your loved ones are keeping well and taking care during these challenging times. CTLT has been working on transitioning to support the UBC teaching and learning community's shift to a remote modality. The CTLT Indigenous Initiatives team has needed some time to re-group and think through how we could best continue our programming in an online format.
We wanted to reach out to our readership and let you know that you are in our thoughts and are here to support you. We are committed to decolonizing practices and working with our colleagues across the university in supporting Indigenous engagement in teaching and learning.

In light of our in-person events being cancelled for the foreseeable future, we have chosen to focus this newsletter to share resources that we hope will be helpful to you during this time.

2. CTLT Indigenous Initiatives Welcomes New Staff, Kyle Shaughnessy

CTLT Indigenous Initiatives is pleased to welcome Kyle Shaughnessy. Kyle will be taking on the role as an Educational Consultant, Staff Training, providing consultation and support for staff, students, and faculty seeking to foster greater inclusion and representation of Indigenous voices and perspectives in university curriculum and engagement strategies. We asked Kyle to share a few fun facts about himself.

3.  CTLT Indigenous Initiatives COVID-19 Resources

In lieu of the "Across Our Desks: News and Articles Related to Indigenous Engagement in Teaching and Learning" section, we have created a Wiki page to collect and share resources that relate to decolonizing practices in teaching and learning during this pandemic. Please note the Wiki page is a living document and will continue to be updated by the CTLT Indigenous Initiatives team throughout this time.

Access the Wiki page.

From April 20-22, CTLT will be hosting the Remote Teaching Institute to support UBC educators with an opportunity to explore teaching in remote learning spaces. The CTLT Indigenous Initiatives team will be facilitating a couple of sessions for the Remote Teaching Institute (listed below).

Unfortunately the Remote Teaching Institute sessions are currently full. If you would like to be added to the waitlist, please visit the links below. However we would still like to hear from you and stay connected, and will also be offering Virtual Coffee Hour Drop-Ins on April 23rd from 11am-12pm and April 29th from 11am-12pm. Please contact Erin Yun at erin.yun@ubc.ca if you have any questions.

a. Centring Indigenous Perspectives in Online Spaces - April 21, 2020 from 2:30-3:30pm

Please join us in learning about how online spaces can host conversations around decolonizing and Indigenous-centred practices. CTLT Indigenous Initiatives resources will be presented and a discussion initialted around ways that these resources can be brought into your classroom.

b. Supporting Students Bandwidth in Online Learning Environments - April 22, 2020 from 9-10am

What can we do to support students and instructors as they learn online? When we consider student learning in online environments, it is not enough to be learner-centred. How can we support the whole student? How can we focus on activities that are accessible to students within limitations of time, bandwidth and devices? In this session we will explore how instructors can create space for themselves and their students to lead less stressful lives, while acknowledging that learning and living at this time are very closely intertwined.

c. CTLT Indigenous Initiatives Virtual Coffee Hour Drop-in: April 23, 11am-12pm; April 29, 11am-12pm

The virtual coffee hour drop-in's are intended to be informal, with the goal to keep us connected. We know that right now what some of us need is just to keep connected, so feel free to drop by these informal sessions for a chat!
